Will AI Replace Cybersecurity Workers? The Ironic Truth

Here's the most ironic thing about AI and cybersecurity: every time AI gets more powerful, cybersecurity gets both easier and harder at the same time. The same technology that can detect threats faster also creates threats faster. It's an arms race where both sides are using the same weapon.

i was a data scientist before i was made redundant. i worked adjacent to security teams, close enough to see how they operated. The analysts staring at dashboards at 2am, the incident responders who'd cancel holidays because someone clicked a phishing link, the pen testers who thought like criminals professionally. These aren't people being replaced. They're people being overwhelmed — and AI is both the cause and the solution.

The short answer

AI is not going to reduce the number of cybersecurity jobs. If anything, it's going to increase them. But the nature of those jobs is changing dramatically. The analyst who manually reviews security logs is being replaced by the analyst who manages AI systems that review security logs. What AI can already do in cybersecurity

The defensive side has made genuine leaps.

Threat detection and anomaly identification is where AI shines brightest. Modern Security Operations Centres (SOCs) use AI to monitor network traffic, identify unusual patterns, and flag potential threats in real time. What used to require a human analyst staring at a SIEM dashboard for hours can now be triaged automatically. The AI doesn't get tired, doesn't lose focus, and can correlate events across millions of log entries simultaneously.

Automated incident response is getting real. When a known threat pattern is detected, AI systems can now isolate affected systems, block malicious IPs, quarantine suspicious files, and initiate standard response procedures before a human even looks at the alert. For the 80% of incidents that follow predictable patterns, this is transformative.

Vulnerability scanning and assessment. AI tools can now scan codebases, infrastructure, and configurations far more thoroughly than manual reviews. They can prioritise vulnerabilities based on actual exploitability rather than theoretical severity, which is a massive improvement over the old "everything is critical" approach.

Phishing detection has got dramatically better. AI can now analyse email content, sender behaviour, URL patterns, and contextual factors to catch phishing attempts that would sail past rule-based filters. The detection rate has improved substantially since LLMs entered the picture.

Threat intelligence aggregation and analysis. AI can process vast amounts of threat data from multiple sources, identify trends, predict attack vectors, and produce actionable intelligence briefs. This used to be a full-time job for multiple analysts.

What AI still can't do

And here's where it gets interesting, because cybersecurity is one of those fields where AI's limitations are particularly consequential.

Novel attack identification. AI is excellent at spotting patterns it's been trained on. It's poor at identifying genuinely new attack vectors that don't match existing patterns. The most dangerous threats are the ones nobody's seen before, and those still require human creativity and lateral thinking to anticipate and detect.

Strategic security architecture. Designing the security posture of an organisation — deciding what to protect, how to balance security against usability, where to accept risk and where to eliminate it — requires business understanding, risk judgement, and political navigation that AI can't do. The CISO role is not being automated.

Adversarial thinking. The best security professionals think like attackers. They imagine what they'd do if they wanted to breach this system, then defend against it. This creative, adversarial reasoning is fundamentally human. AI can simulate known attack patterns, but it can't replicate the malicious creativity of a skilled human attacker. Which is also the problem, because the attackers are human too.

Human factors and social engineering defence. Most breaches start with a human doing something they shouldn't. Training staff, building security culture, designing systems that account for human behaviour — this is organisational and psychological work that AI supports but doesn't replace.

Incident response in complex, novel situations. When something truly unprecedented happens, the response requires judgement, communication, stakeholder management, and decisions made under extreme pressure with incomplete information. AI handles the playbook incidents. Humans handle the crises.

Legal and regulatory compliance in cybersecurity. GDPR, NIS2, sector-specific regulations — these require interpretation, judgement, and the ability to make defensible decisions about proportionate security measures. A regulator wants to talk to a human, not an algorithm.

The real risk

The irony that keeps me up at night when i think about this sector: AI is making cybersecurity jobs more necessary, not less.

AI-powered attacks are here. Attackers are using AI to generate more convincing phishing emails, create deepfake voice and video for social engineering, find vulnerabilities in code automatically, and launch attacks at a scale and sophistication that wasn't possible before. The threat landscape is expanding faster than the defender workforce.

The cybersecurity skills gap was already enormous before AI entered the picture. The global shortage of cybersecurity professionals is measured in millions. AI isn't closing that gap — it's widening it, because the attack surface is growing faster than AI can automate the defence.

What is at risk is the entry-level SOC analyst role in its traditional form. If your job is primarily monitoring dashboards and escalating alerts based on predefined criteria, AI is doing that now. The entry point into cybersecurity is shifting from "watch the alerts" to "manage the AI that watches the alerts." This raises a real question about how new people enter the profession.

The managed security services market is consolidating. AI allows fewer analysts to manage more clients, which means some MSSP roles will be reduced even as the overall market for security services grows.

What to do about it

1. Move up the abstraction ladder. If your current role is primarily alert triage and routine analysis, start developing skills in threat hunting, incident response, and security architecture. The AI handles the routine. You handle the complex.

2. Learn how AI systems are attacked. Prompt injection, model poisoning, adversarial inputs, AI supply chain attacks — this is the new frontier. Security professionals who understand AI vulnerabilities are in extremely high demand and short supply. This is the growth area.

3. Develop your adversarial thinking. Formal pen testing and red team skills are increasingly valuable because they represent the creative, offensive thinking that AI can't replicate. If you're on the defensive side, understanding how attackers operate makes you dramatically more effective.

4. Build communication and business skills. The senior cybersecurity roles — CISO, security consultant, risk advisor — require the ability to explain technical risks to non-technical people, make business cases for security investment, and navigate organisational politics. These skills are your long-term career insurance.

5. Get comfortable with AI security tools. Not just as a user, but as someone who understands their limitations. The security professional who knows when the AI is wrong, who can investigate what the automated system missed, is far more valuable than the one who just trusts the dashboard. The tool is only as good as the person interpreting it.

The bottom line

Cybersecurity is that rare field where AI simultaneously creates the problem and is part of the solution. The result is not fewer jobs, but different jobs. More strategic, more complex, higher up the value chain.
