Robotic Process Automation — RPA for short — is software that mimics what a human does on a computer. Clicking buttons, copying data between systems, filling in forms, sending emails. It's not a physical robot; it's a programme that follows the same steps you would, just without the tea breaks or the existential dread.

RPA has actually been around for years, long before the current AI hype. Tools like UiPath, Automation Anywhere, and Blue Prism let companies record a process — say, copying invoice data from emails into a spreadsheet — and then let a bot repeat that process thousands of times without getting bored or making typos. The newer versions are getting smarter by combining traditional RPA with AI, so they can handle tasks that aren't perfectly predictable, like reading handwritten forms or making simple decisions.

Why it matters for your job

I'll be honest: if your job is primarily about moving data from one system to another, RPA is coming for it. In many cases, it's already arrived. Finance teams, HR departments, and customer service operations have been the first to feel it. The repetitive, rule-based tasks that used to employ entire teams can now be handled by a few bots running 24/7.

But here's the thing — someone still needs to set these bots up, maintain them, and fix them when they break (which they do, regularly). The people who understand both the business process and the automation tool are in enormous demand. RPA doesn't eliminate jobs so much as it reshapes them.

What to do about it

Map out the most repetitive parts of your day. If you're doing the same clicks in the same order more than a few times a week, that's an RPA candidate. Learn the basics of a tool like Power Automate or UiPath — even a surface-level understanding puts you ahead of most people. Being the person who automates the boring stuff is a much better position than being the person who used to do the boring stuff.
